Baby Games

I love hearing new rhymes for babies. You know, the kind where you bounce them on your knees, get them all hyped up and then give them back to their parents? That’s the kind I mean. We recently spent some time with some old friends and picked this one up.

Cowboy, cowboy, won’t you be my cowboy?

Don’t say ‘no’! Gotta Go,

Off to ride the range!

And this one has been in the family for so long. The babies always love it.

Ride a little horsie up along a hill

Girls go to market, boys go to mill

Where ya going, little boy? (to the mill!)

Better watch out down there,

There’s a snake down there.

He’ll scare your horse and make you fall.

Say, “no danger!” (no danger!)

Trot trot trot trot trot trot, Whooo!

What are some of your favorite rhymes/games for babies?

I love how little rhymes like that are fimilar no matter where you live. Everyone seems to have their own versions.
Our version of the horse ride is:

Ride the little horsey down to town
    Watch out little boy/girl
    Don’t fall down

My mother used to wake us up in the mornings with:

    Eye Winker (point to eye)
    Tom Thinker (point to forehead)
    Nose Smeller (point to nose)
    Mouth Taster (point to mouth)
Gully Gully Gully (tickle under chin)

It isn’t fun to be woken up to a Gully Gully Gully!

I’m hearing “Yellow” and tearing up! It passes by so fast. My daughter has been doing the “Five Little Moneys” and “Five Little Bears” a lot lately.

Oh, my grandma used to do this with me and my siblings and cousins! I had no idea there were other chants. This is the one she used:

This is the way the ladies ride:
    Walk, walk, walk.
This is the way the gentlemen ride:
    Trot, trot, trot.
    IN COME THE COUNTRY LADS,
    GALLOPING, GALLOPING, GALLOPING, GALLOPING…

The last line would go on until Grandma was out of breath. You use a genteel voice with the first two couplets and let it all loose on the last. Good for many giggles.

Thanks for commenting on my blog; I appreciate your encouragement.

Jodi, I had forgotten until reading your comment that my Grandma used to do that one with me! She died when I was 5, so it’s hard to remember, but the last line went, “Hobblety hoy, hobblety hoy….and so on. I thought it was so funny.
